Is There Pre-Training For Fitness Bootcamp?

Because of the high intensity of the fitness bootcamp workout, many trainers offer an introductory pre-training class or group for prospective students.  A good trainer will make sure that these classes are very well-organized and provide accurate snapshots of the bootcamp experience.  If you have doubts about your fitness or energy level, the types of exercises required, or the training style of the coach, trying a little pre-training will definitely give you an edge.

Virtually all bootcamps begin with a short interview and a more extensive physical evaluation.  Your “interview” may feel like a short discussion with the instructor, with the physical evaluation designed to establish the approximate level of physical fitness you already possess.  Based on the interview, the evaluation and your instructors training and experience you may be directed to fitness bootcamp pre-training or to the actual bootcamp.  Frequently, new students do not even know they are a member of a novice group that requires some pre-training.

You will begin with a vigorous, energetic warm-up.  This step is crucial to prime your body for the upcoming workout.  Your heart will start to pump faster, increasing the circulation.  You’ll need the extra oxygen from your blood once you really get moving!  The warm-up is also used to learn moves that will be done later in the main workout.  Practicing the movements at a lower intensity (fewer reps, less weight or less speed) builds and triggers muscle memory and minimizes potential injuries.

The top fitness bootcamp instructors know how to bring out the best in each student.  Remember that everyone has to start somewhere.  The only difference between you and the star bootcamper is that they started earlier than you did.  Your trainer understands this and should be motivating and encouraging.  They should also be open and approachable, eager to help you learn and create positive changes in your life.

Some introductory courses also give you a peek into the fitness bootcamp diet (if they have one).  If you truly want the results they claim, you will have to follow it religiously. So make sure that your commitment is solid and you already have a plan for when you feel less enthused.  Then dive into the diet plan, stay positive, and constantly envision yourself in the body you really desire.

Never judge a bootcamp from one single experience.  It is often an acquired, but addicting taste. Give yourself time to find your place and begin feeling comfortable with the training.  Allow your body to adapt to the new exercises and routines.  Be determined to do this for yourself and you will conquer the surrounding fears and insecurities.  As you become more open, you will begin to feel more and more empowered with each class.  Then nothing will stop you!

  1. why bother with a pre-training when you can go to a fitness bootcamp resort that’s like a vacation! In 2-6 weeks you can have fitness bootcamp while people cook for you, give you massages and spa treatments, you can take yoga and tai-chi, do detox treatments, and more! now THATS how to get fit!

  2. LOL @ Linda! That sounds more like pampering then working out but hey that might work at getting people motivated to get there in the first place. I guess whatever works. That picture of the diet first photo is enough to give me doubts, I love my meat. I admit I could use better eating habits. I like the idea of a pre-class as long as I don’t feel like I’m in a group for people who clearly can’t make it in the regular class.

  3. Some people would call it irresponsible of a bootcamp instructor *not* to undertake pre-training or evaluation before allowing students into the full boot camp class. What to remember about boot camps is that you have people coming along who the instructor has never seen before and knows nothing about their condition, and here they are signing up for what should be daily intensive workouts at a fitness bootcamp.

Some kind of assessment is clearly required :o )

  4. I start bootcamp next week and I admit I am out of shape, but I had not thought of pre-training until I saw the above bootcamp article. It’s a good point though, and I am now planning on doing some gentle exercise in the house so I can prepare my body for the shock it is about to get at bootcamp!
