Fitness Bootcamps Can Overcome Self-Doubt

Although there are many reasons that motivate people to attend a fitness bootcamp, once they have signed up and committed themselves to regular exercise under professional guidance, they will eventually fall into a pattern that will be recognized by professionals and fellow classmates. This pattern can lead to success and achievement of the goal, or it may lead to a reduction in that initial commitment and ultimately failure.

In order to avoid failure and the disappointment that goes hand in hand with failing to meet your own goals, it is important to recognize these stages and both accept them as normal reactions and plan to avoid them.

  • within the acclimatisation phase (i.e. the first few weeks)
  • within the comfort zone (i.e. after the first month but before 6 months)
  • after long term regular attendance

One of the biggest reasons for early withdrawal from a fitness bootcamp during the acclimatisation phase is that of self doubt.  Of the total number of people who leave a fitness bootcamp within the first few sessions a high percentage will be due to self doubt and a lack of belief in their own potential to succeed.  Self doubt can eat away at an individual, and as the results from a new fitness regimen can take at least a month to manifest themselves in a noticeable physical improvement, many people will allow that lack of immediate improvement to feed their self doubt.

Avoiding self doubt should not be difficult if approached logically, and with a degree of common sense.  In particular goal-setting has to be reasonable and expectations should not be set too high.  A student will of course have their own expectations of where they want to be with their own level of fitness after a certain period of time, but it is up to the fitness bootcamp instructors to make sure that these expectations are achievable within the time frame.

Fitness bootcamp should not just be about the group, it should have individual focus if it is to retain membership. Recognition of the needs and goals in the various individuals that make up the group will help resist the temptation for self doubt, and the devastating results it can have on personal progress.

The warning signs of self doubt will usually appear during the early phase of membership as described previously, but if identified can be reversed and the potential for success increased.

The primary warning signs for self doubt are a noticeable and visible change in energy and confidence levels.  If new participants to the fitness bootcamp start to shy away to the rear of the class, or fail to engage with other members of the camp, this is an early indicator of a poor confidence level.  A good instructor will address this by encouraging the affected member with plenty of positive feedback and include routines which require interaction with other group members.

If members of the class can identify and recognize in themselves low confidence they can also address this to avoid self doubt affecting their progress.  One way to do this is to take a friend to fitness bootcamp rather than go alone. Another practical measure is to ask if there is a fitness bootcamp video they can purchase to learn the routines at home.  In this way when attending the fitness bootcamp they need not worry about appearing to be in the minority of members who do not know the routines.Fitness Bootcamp

Another idea for members who are starting to doubt their own progress is to re-evaluate their own goals and reset them if required.  Often new members can expect too much of themselves and the bootcamp.  Addressing this with a re-assessment of their goals can result in a far superior and rewarding experience; allowing less opportunity for self doubt to affect progress.

  1. I wonder why it is that we expect such quick results. It took us a period of time to gain the weight so why do we expect it to just magically shed off so soon? I think part of it is society pushing us to be as thin and as beautiful as those on the magazine covers.

  2. I agree that finding a partner to go with really helps, although when I was totally fitness bootcamp motivated I actually went to one myself to find that there were people there that I knew already. Not people that I was friendly with, but faces I recognised that gave me a welcoming smile – that makes all the difference.

  3. I’m proud to say that I’m already at the “comfort zone” stage. However, I have to admit that I almost withdrew from the program. I wasn’t seeing results and I didn’t think that my body can take the workouts.

Fortunately, my classmates in the class were able to make me realize that results are happening even if I can’t see them. Maybe I was just trying to exit early because I’ve been burned in the past with other “miracle workouts”. I guess that’s the beauty of fitness bootcamps. You have other “soldiers” who are willing to give you that extra push so you can get rid of self-doubt.

  5. One of the many advantages of a fitness bootcamp is the strong and reliable support and encouragement coming from co-members and fitness mentors or coaches.

Just like any other program, self-doubt can come in and take the person’s chances of sticking it out and eventual success. But unlike any other program, this is clearly lessen in fitness bootcamp because the program already incorporated checkpoints for this big problem.

  6. Me and my close friend decided to attend a fitness bootcamp and I must admit that we almost quit during the so-called “acclimatisation phase” because we are finding it hard to be part of the many physical challenges.

Fortunately, our very patient and caring instructor really talked to us heart to heart and explained to us what really happened and how we can overcome self-doubt as a big hindrance to success.
